This week I have had the privilege to attend Skip’s Summer School, an intensive three day photography school led by the most respected photographers in the industry. I learned new techniques which I am super excited to try, and I thought this would be a perfect inspiration to begin my new blog.
Over the past two days I was mentored under Jerry Ghionis and Kevin Kubata, in a small setting of 20 students photographing live models. We would shoot photos, and our instructors would walk around the room showing us their camera screen. As a natural competitor I immediately critiqued my peers- what equipment were they using? what is their specialty? how much more experience do they have than me? One of the highlights of the events was when an older gentleman standing next to me looked at my camera screen after I took a shot and said, “That is absolutely gorgeous, how did you get that lighting?” I was in complete awe, this older guy who has been shooting for 20 years just complimented me?! As the class continued I noticed many of my photos replicated the ones of the instructors, it was indeed a truly wonderful feeling. I can confident to say that I felt at home with this group, honored to be able to confidently call myself a business owner and professional photographer.
